Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract my audience I made sure my models were wearing the latest fashions, currently the biggest trend is 'short shorts' on females. So my model wore 'short shorts' and a shirt. This appeals to the audience as this is the latest trend and they are always wanting to be on top of the latest fashion, and it is clothing my reader will probably wear. As you can see below there is an image of a female who attended a Tiesto gig, she is wearing a similar thing to what the model is wearing in my magazine.
To attract my audience I chose to write with an informal attitude, a casual 'one-to-one' style was more appropriate as it makes the audience feel more comfortable and it is easy to read. By using language such as 'tech' 'tune' 'yeah boii' and 'raving' appeals to the audience as this is the type of language they will use, so they know that the magazine is aimed at them.

Also i wanted to appeal to the males who are up to date in the fashion world, so the model is wearing a plan white tee and jeans, similar to what the male in the image above is wearing, who also attended Tiesto's gig. I think I have appealed to my audience well as the images I have used represent the readers well.
Question 4
Who would the audience be for your media product?
When I first started the project I wanted the magazine to be aimed at both males and females, between the ages of 16 and 25, but it could also appeal to people over 25.
When I first started the project I wanted the magazine to be aimed at both males and females, between the ages of 16 and 25, but it could also appeal to people over 25.
As my magazine is supposed to be dedicated to the dubstep genre it only appeals to a ceratin number of people, but it does cover some drum and bass so appeals to a wider audience of both male and females. From my research I found that the average age of people who read music magazines is 17, also I found that more males enjoy the dubstep genre but I know that there are some females who enjoy dubstep, so I have tried to make the magazine appeal to both genders, by using images of both genders and colours that appeal to male and females, I think I have achieved that.
Typical readers of my magazine.
Both of these readers are passionate about this genre of music and regularly attend gigs, they both have a disposable income which is usual spent on the latest trends, tunes and nights out.
Gender- Male
Age-18
Favourite dubstep artist- Ry Legit
Gender- Female
Age-16
Favourite dubstep artist- Excision
Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Ways in which my media product represents a particular social group is through the colour scheme, images and the style and language of writing.
The colour scheme is bright blue, pink/purple, black and white, these colours represent a club atmosphere, so the social group is predominately people who go to clubs, so this is male and females aged 18-25. The use of the colours also represents gender, the blue represents the males and appeals to them, but is also a colour that appeals to females. The pink/purple represents the females, but yet again is a colour that appeals to both male and females. The blacks and whites are suppose to represent the darkness of a club and the white the flashing of the lights, so the people reading my magazine can relate to this.
The images used in my magazine are of both male and females, I decided to use both male and female models as it appeals to both genders and represents the audience of the magazine. The people in the images are between the ages of 16 and 25, which represents the age group. Another thing that represents the age group is the style/language of the writing. I have used words such as ‘raving’ ‘tune’ ‘yeah boii’ and ‘tech’ this represents the age group as these are words 16-25 year olds use, by using them in the magazine the audience know its for them.
The dubstep genre is normally linked to ‘chavs’ and people of the lower class, my magazine challenges this stereotype as it is aimed at ‘normal’ people who are middle class, by using models that are middle class it represents the social group well, also the style of clothing the models are wearing represent the social class.
Evaluation-Question 1
In what ways does yout media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I think 'Sinewave' is similar to existing products as it follows forms and conventions of a typical music magazine and does not try to challenge any of them.
Front Cover-On the left is my magazine and on the right is an existing product, Mixmag. As you can see they are different but both follow the conventions of a magazine. Sinewave has a mast head, cover lines, an image, barcode and issue number, like any other magazine does. Some magazines do feature the website on the front cover and i have done so, i have also featured the website on the contents page and double page spread.
Unlike this front cover of Mixmag i have chosen to use a picture of an artist featuring in the magazine, i think by doing this it grabs the readers attention more and as i used a female on the front cover it appeals to both male and female audiences.
Bold titles are normally used to make the name of the magazine stand out and the titles are usually situated at the top of the cover, in the centre, this is done so when the magazine is on a shelf it can easily picked out. My magazine follows this convention as the title,'Sinewave' is in a bold font which i downloaded from 'dafont.com' I chose to use this font as it is quite electronic looking, which goes well with the genre of dubstep and is eye catching. Also the title/logo will be unique to the magazine so the audience can associate that font with Sinewave.
Magazines will always have cover lines as they sell the other stories featuring in the magazine. As you can see i have also followed this basic convention.
The front cover of a magazine will normally only use 3 colours as it is more aesthetically pleasing. My chosen colour scheme is Blue, White and Pink because in my market research i found that people associate bright blues, pink/purple and whites with dubstep.
Contents Page- On my front cover the lighting is quite dark around the edges of the model as it is supposed to represent a club scene, as they are normally quite dark. I have tried to re-create this effect on the contents page by using the gradient tool on Adobe Photoshop.
I have used blue, pink and white on the contents page to keep it consistent with the front cover, by using these colours it shows continuity and makes it aesthetically pleasing. Also it shows that there is a clear genre of this magazine.
The writing on the contents pages is usually set out in columns of 2 or 3, as you can see mine has been set out in 2 columns. Also i have used the same fonts i used on the front cover, on the contents page so there is continuity and aesthetically pleasing. Normally the word 'contents' is on the top of the page so it is the first thing the audience reads. This is another convention my magazine has followed.
Another convention is that on the list of contents, the page number will come before the text, and a few words about the story will follow, as you can see from the image above. A subline gives a bit more detail on the article in a smaller, calibri, size 11 font.
i followed another convention which normally appears in magazines, using smaller images along side the text. These images normally link to other stories featured in the magazine. I decided to use 4 images instead of 3 because they fit in a column better, which makes it look more professional.
Double Page Spread-
Double page spreads typically have an image covering one page, the left, and the article on the next page, the right. As we read from left to right, the image is the first thing you notice, I have followed this convention.
The artists name is usually in a bold font, which tell sthe audience who the article is about. I used a bold font, which I used on the front cover and used a pink/purple which is part of the colour scheme. This shows continuity throughout the magazine.
As you can see I have followed a nother convention, the page number and website is situated in the bottom left and right hand corner, which is what you would see in any magazine.
The writing is usually in 2-4 columns, my writing is split up into 2 columns and a third column is created by 3 images of the artist. This is not a typical convention but i have done this as it is aesthetically pleasing. I think my double page spread has followed the basic conventions.

Sonny Moore, better known as Skrillex to you and me, has won a MTV EDM Artist of the year award AND is up for 5 awards at the Grammys! YEAH BOII! Skrillex has had an insane year, kicking off in February with her new tour, Project Blue Book with support from DJ Aero, Tommy Lee and Porter Robinson. She then released her 3rd album More Monsters and Sprites on the 7th June which features 3 original tracks, F***ing Die, Reptile and Ruffneck bass and finished off the year by releasing a new album Bangarang on the 21st December!
Love her or hate her, Skrillex has a mass of support, winning Artist of the year in 2011, now up for 5 Grammy’s- Including ‘Best new artist’. Skrill told sinewave on Friday, (December 2) shes still not sure what it all means, what the big picture is, ‘I honestly didn’t expect it all, winning artist of the year, THEN being up for five Grammys?! I don’t even know what the whole Grammy thing is’ ‘I was just chilling, listening to some tunes in Sherwood Forest with a few mates and my tour manager pops his head into my bunk, screaming like ’Yeeeeaaah!’, baring in mind we’d been drinking, having a good time, I had no idea what was going on!’
Jumping back a few years..
After leaving the hardcore punk band, From First to Last, Sonny started her solo career in 2007. Her first 3 demos were, Signal, Equinox and Glow worm, this then lead to Sonny’s very first performance without the band, alongside Carol Robbins.
Bouncing into 2008, this was the year Sonny’s production career really exploded! After working on her first album for the past two years, Sonny released her first mind blowing dub step mash up album on the 7th June 2010, my name is Skrillex! This featured First of the equinox and my name is Skrillex. When Skrillex was signed to Mau5trap recordings she had a nationwide tour with Deadmau5 and released her second EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites on the 25th October 2010.
On the 17th august 2011, Skrillex announced her label as OWSLA and will be playing nine dates all over the UK.
TOUR
The ‘grey Daze’ tour will begin on the 8th February 2012 and will finish on the 17th April at Leeds O2 academy, Flux pavillion, feed me and Koan sound have announced they are going to support Skrill! She told us, “This is going to be an incredible tour, I wanted a diverse line-up and I wanted to showcase great music, great people, and great times!”- Looking at the line up I’m sure it will be just that. Tickets are available now
Photographs
These are some of the images that i am going to use in my Front cover, contents page and double page spread. Most of the images are mid shots-i have done this because when the images are in my magazine it will make the audience feel more intitmate with the artists.
As you can see the images are similar to the photographs i used in my 'photography plan'

Mock Up- Front Cover
I have created a mock up of what i would like my front cover to look like. I found from research that my audience associate red, black and blue with dubstep. This is why i have used these colours on the text. I will probably use black on some of the writing, but i think i am going to use a brighter/lighter blue for the mast head, i think a lighter blue would reflect the audience and genre of music a lot better. Also if i use a lighter red, or maybe a pink/purple colour it would appeal more to a female audience.
